Aloha! As a Native Hawaiian born and raised in Kaʻū, my roots run deep in this special place. My connection to Kaʻū traces back to my paternal grandmother, who was 100% Native Hawaiian, and to our ancestor, Mahi Neʻe Neʻe, born in the ahupuaʻa of Kaʻū around 1710. These stories, passed down through generations, instilled in me a profound respect for our heritage and a commitment to our community.Inspired by this legacy, I founded the Mālama Kaʻū Foundation to give back to the land and people that shaped me. As Chairman, I am honored to work with our Board to create programs that uplift the residents of Kaʻū, preserve our rural culture, and honor the spirit of our ancestors. Together, we strive to build a stronger future for Kaʻū while staying true to our heritage.Mahalo for your support as we work to Mālama Kaʻū.
Our North Star - Respect the Past, Embrace the Future
Kaʻū, one of Hawai‘i’s largest and most remote districts, lies on the southern slopes of Mauna Loa. Its people are known for their resilience, independence, and deep love for their ancestral homeland. This self-reliance has been shaped by Kaʻū’s seclusion, which has also helped preserve its Native Hawaiian culture and traditions.Ka Lae (South Point), the southernmost point in Hawai‘i, holds ancient sites like Kalalea Heiau, canoe mooring holes, and habitation caves, reflecting Kaʻū’s historical and cultural significance. Despite its beauty, Kaʻū has faced outside pressures, from plantation industries to modern developments. The Mālama Kaʻū Foundation is dedicated to preserving Kaʻū’s unique culture, heritage, and way of life, ensuring that progress respects our history and supports future generations.
