The largest district in Hawaiʻi, Kaʻū is so expansive it can fit all of Oʻahu within its borders. Shaped by lava, cliffs, and crashing seas, the land is harsh—and so are the people it forged.
Here, Ka’u Chief Keōua Kūʻahuʻula led a fierce resistance against Kamehameha. He never lost a battle. His strength came from the terrain and the loyalty of Kaʻū’s people. His fight ended through betrayal, not defeat.
That warrior spirit lives on.
In our land. In our people. In all we do.

Kīlauea, Hawaiʻi’s only active volcano, rises from the heart of Kaʻū.
Among the most active in the world, Kīlauea has shaped the land for centuries—from the ancient Ailaʻau eruption to its 35-year modern flow ending in 2018.
Regarded as the home of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire, Kīlauea is both a force of nature and a sacred symbol of creation in Hawaiian culture.
